Big K.R.I.T. and Big Sant at Amo's Southend in Charlotte, NC

A week ago, Big K.R.I.T. and the rest of The Smokers Club touched down in Charlotte, NC. They did a show at Amo’s Southend. When I heard that Smoke Dza, Big K.R.I.T., and Curren$y were on tour together, along with an opening by my homie Dow Jones, I knew I had to go to the show. I listen to their music daily, whether I’m doing homework, playing video games, sitting on the clouds, taking it to the head with my homies, so I knew I was ready for an amazing performance.

When I see the name Big K.R.I.T., I think of the South and what it represents. Big K.R.I.T. is a multitalented rapper, singer, and producer. I’ve recently learned that K.R.I.T. is an acronym for “King Remembered In Time”, a title that is difficult to live up to, but definitely reflected in his music. K.R.I.T. Wuz Here defines southern music, where southern slang meets lyricism, which meets the struggle that he has overcome to get where he is now.

“Let me tell you ‘bout this, superfly dirty dirty, third coast muddy water, shawty pop that pussy if you wanna. Let me tell you ‘bout this old school, pouring lean, candy yams and collard greens, pocket full of stones riding clean. Big Sant and Big K.R.I.T. at Amo's Southend in Charlotte, NC

On October 27th, K.R.I.T. and Big Sant hopped on the stage after co-headliner, Smoke Dza’s, performance . For those of you who don’t know who Big Sant is, he is the other half of The Alumni, a rap duo composed of himself and Big K.R.I.T. They showed love to Queen City, and my, oh my, did Charlotte show love back. K.R.I.T. and Sant stirred the crowd with “Just Touched Down”, along with songs like “See Me on Top”, “Moon & Stars”, “Hometown Hero”, “Country Shit”, and “Children of the World.” K.R.I.T. was very live with the crowd, his energy obvious in every single step, heard through every word. My favorite performance of the night was “Children of the World”. He definitely kept it real on that track. “The cars and the broads and the kicks is something to strive for when you ain't never had shit. I'm feeling like what the fuck, they want my soul, like my ancestors' ain't enough.” His lyrics represent milestones of his life. He doesn’t just paint a picture, he allows you to follow him through his journey. This journey may not be your own, or that you may not want to follow, but one that exudes his emotions. This vicarious experience allows the listener to understand his way of life.

Overall his performance embodied his current mixtape, K.R.I.T. Wuz Here. During his explosive show, he also performed with Smoke Dza and Curren$y. Is Hip-Hop ready for a Southern Takeover? I think not. But I know K.R.I.T. telling these rap niggas “See me on top.” Return of Forever coming out soon!
